The name of May comes from Maia, the Roman goddess of growth. May is the last month of spring. The weather is usually warm and the evenings are light. There are flowers on the trees and in gardens. Gardeners are busy because everything grows quickly in this month. Many animals and birds have babies in May. The first day of May is May Day but the first Monday of May is a holiday. For most people, there's no work or school. In some villages, there are some traditional May Day celebrations. There is music and dancing. Sometimes a girl is chosen to be the May Queen. She wears a white dress and wears a crown made of flowers. The last Monday in May is also a holiday, called the Spring Bank Holiday. It’s another long weekend for most people and the start of a one-week holiday for schools. The Chelsea Flower Show happens in London in May. You can see beautiful gardens and new plants from many countries. Lots of people visit, including the royal family, or you can see it on television. May is an important month for English football. There's a big competition called the FA Cup. It's the oldest football competition in the world. It starts in August and ends in May. The best teams go up a level, and the bottom ones go down. The winners play in Europe. There's an FA Cup for women too. For people who like the Star Wars films, May 4th is Star Wars Day! The date, “May the fourth” sounds like famous words from the films, “May the Force be with you!” People who love Star Wars say, “May the Fourth be with you!” to their friends on this day.
