February is the shortest month. There are usually only 28 days in February but once every four years, there are 29 days. A year with an extra day is called a leap year. Traditionally, a woman can ask a man to marry her on February 29th! At the start of February, it’s still winter and sometimes it snows, but at the end of the month, it starts to feel like spring. The days are longer and it gets dark at 5 o’clock or later. There are flowers in the garden, such as snowdrops, crocuses and early daffodils. February 14th in Valentine’s Day. This is a day for love and romance! People buy cards and gifts for their girlfriend, boyfriend, husband or wife. You can buy any kind of gift you like but the most popular gifts are probably chocolates, flowers and jewellery. It’s common to have a romantic dinner in a restaurant or at home. Some people love this day but it can be a sad day if you’re single! Pancake Day is usually in February but it can sometimes be in March. It’s always 47 days before Easter Sunday and the date of Easter depends on the moon. In the past, these 47 days were a time for praying and eating simple food. On Pancake Day, people used up all of the luxury food by making pancakes. Nowadays, people make pancakes just for fun. In England, a lot of people like pancakes with lemon juice and sugar.
