In December, the days are short and the nights are long. The sun comes up at about 8 o’clock and it gets dark at about 4 o’clock in the afternoon. The shortest day is the 21st or 22nd. The weather is usually cold. We sometimes have frost in the morning and we might have some snow. The weather is usually cold. We sometimes have frost (ice on the ground) in the morning. It's beautiful but be careful because you might slip and fall over! Sometimes there is some snow, especially in the hills mountains. There is more snow in the north than in the south. Of course, when we think about December, we also think about Christmas! A lot of people have a Christmas tree and decorate their houses. We buy presents for friends and family and the shops are very crowded. Some people send Christmas cards to friends and family but less now than in the past. Also in December, primary schools have Christmas parties for the children with food, games and Santa Claus! Schools often organise a performance and the parents can come and watch. There are also hold Christmas parties at work. This could be a meal out or a drinks party. Schools close for two weeks over Christmas. Workplaces close for a few days too. The shops are only closed for one day, the 25th. To learn more about Christmas itself, click here. December 31st is New Year’s Eve. People usually spend the evening with friends, maybe at a party. At midnight, we listen to Big Ben, the famous clock in London, strike 12, on the TV or radio, and we drink champagne.
